French Art Glass: Lalique

Lalique: The Lalique glass factory opened in 1907. The genius behind the glass art of this factory was Rene Lalique, who was born in 1860 in the Champagne Region of France. Closure was forced by World War I but the company resumed in 1921 in Alsace, France. The Lalique name is synonymous with quality and class. As I saw in an ad for Lalique ashtrays, it “brings a polished style to any room.” You might expect to see one of these sitting on a table in an old movie with Cary Grant. Paperweights were part of the production from the beginning. The 1932 catalogue shows several different paperweights, including the famous sparrows in various forms. As a clue to dating these paperweights, pre-1946 Lalique glass is signed “R. Lalique,” sometimes with “France.” Post 1946 Laliques are signed “Lalique, France.” In 1980 a ® for registered trademark was added to the signature.
