59. McDermitt. Trout Creek Formation/Miocene. Large, diffuse-porous hardwood full round tertiary hardwood log with excellent cell preservation (probably cherry/fruitwood). Solidly preserved all around. Quite a bit of color for a McDermitt, especially in those unusual circles. Interesting design on the polished end. It must be one of the last remaining of its size and quality. It was dug in the 1950s. 8.5 by 10 cm mirror-polished face; 59 cm long; weight 21 pounds and nine ounces. $3500

60. Rogers Mountain. Large specimen round of driftwoody Sequoiadendron from the elusive Rogers Mountain collecting area. The last I heard, and I heard it a long time ago as in more than two decades, was they were digging twenty-five feet down and the Forest Service came in and shut it down. I also heard that someone was injured in a cave-in while digging there. Fine example that highlights the attractive black sheen, which is unique to this location because of the Sequoiadendron growth rings. Black is not an uncommon color in petrified wood, but most black wood is dull and unattractive, as with most Texas palm – major exceptions are Rogers Mountain and the best black woods from Louisiana and Indonesia. 27 by 11 cm mirror-polished face; 29 cm long; up to 6 cm thick; weight 5 pounds and eight ounces. $1500

61. McDermitt, Zimmerman Ranch. Full round Trochodendron log with one natural end. I have never been to the McDermitt location but have been told that the wood with this attractive red coloring is from Zimmerman Ranch. It seems likely that it would be found elsewhere in the vicinity. I’ve had this piece for a quarter century or more. It was on my website for a long time which I found confounding. It’s a world class unique sculptural masterpiece. Made by Nature. The best (or close to it) McDermitt specimen I have owned. Excellent cellular preservation. 6.5 by 6 cm mirror-polished face; 19 cm long; weight four pounds and three ounces. $2000

62. McDermitt. Full round gnarly specimen with one natural end. Interesting and attractive with the look of a horned creature. Superb character. 4 by 3 cm mirror-polished face; 14 cm long; up to 8 cm thick; weight one pound and four ounces. $700

63. McDermitt. Full round coffee brown specimen with one natural end. Excellent ring porous to semi-ring porous hardwood structures. 4.5 by 5 cm mirror-polished face; 17 cm long; weight one pound and six ounces. $800

64. South Fork Crooked River area. Full round quartzy limb cast with especially attractive exterior patination. It comes together as a spectacular piece. 9.5 by 7 cm mirror-polished face; 8 cm long; weight one pound and eleven ounces. $450

65. McDermitt. Full round Trochodendron with one natural end, always one of my favorite McDermitts because it’s a great piece and also has an interesting pedigree with the original label. Trochodendron is a rare vesselless hardwood. Unsure of seller. I had to re-sand and polish it. Excellent cellular structures. 3.5 by 3.5 cm polished face; 14 cm long; fourteen ounces. $600

66. McDermitt. Full round hardwood with one natural end. Attractive shape and colors. Knotty. Portions of diffuse porous cell structures with prominent rays as in sycamore. 3.5 by 3.5 cm polished face; 11 cm long; thirteen ounces. $350

67. McDermitt. Full round Zimmerman Ranch Trochodendron with one natural end and a dog leg shape. It’s the fork of a branch. Good structures at the edges. 3 by 3 cm polished face; 12 cm long; twelve ounces. $300

68. McDermitt. Full round branch section with one natural end. It’s the type of specimen you can hold and turn and wonder how it ripped from the tree. Was it a fierce wind? An animal? Old age? 5.5 by 3 cm polished face; 9 cm long; thirteen ounces. $450

69. McDermitt. Full round Zimmerman Ranch Trochodendron with one natural end. 4 by 3.5 cm polished face; 13 cm long; eleven ounces. $300

70. McDermitt. Full round Zimmerman Ranch Trochodendron with one natural end. Base of small tree maybe. 5.5 by 3.5 cm polished face; 7 cm long; eight ounces.  $300

71. McDermitt. Full round Zimmerman Ranch cut on both ends and polished on one. Unusual and extremely well-preserved fat-celled complex vessel hardwood structures. 2.5 by 3.5 cm polished face; 4 cm long; four ounces.   $100
