Camper trip to Oregon and back, 2010

This was the first long trip in my new camper. Previously, I had a low-profile camper shell on back and things were more rustic. The truck’s a 2001 Tundra with an 8-cylinder engine and good clearance. I’d been preparing for the trip for a few weeks and was surprised when Olivia asked if she could go. She was 17 and entering her senior year in high school in August. I was happy to have her company. I’d been to this spot before. It’s near Twin Falls and always has beautiful sunsets, but watch out for rattlesnakes.

We stopped on Santiam Pass and hiked a short stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail. A fire ripped through about three years earlier.

We stopped in Salem to visit our cousins, Roseanne, Luann, and Madison. They live amid enormous Douglas firs. And then it was off to the beach!
We made a pact. We had to go in over your head once a day. This was late June and the water was cold.
Night 4. Carl Washburne state park
Night 5. Beachside Campground near Yachats. Great place – right on the beach – excellent showers. The best.

Heceta Head lighthouse. Most promontories on the Oregon Coast have Spanish names, because the Spanish were the first to map it. The glass for the German lenses came around Cape Horn in the 1800s.
Sometimes you need to get out of the wind.
This was on the way home, in the Cascades.
