ARIZONA
Chinle formation; Triassic. Northern Arizona, USA.
52 pieces

1. Amazing Gaze. Full round slice. This specimen is at the very apex of all the great Arizona wood ever found. The overall balance of form and color is impossible to improve upon. I got this from my friend Jim Gray in time to put it on the cover of Petrified Wood and also inside as a full page image. There is a slice of this log in Jim Gray’s Museum in Holbrook. 21 by 18 cm polished face; 17 mm thick; two pounds and seven ounces.

2. Nazlini. Purple glassy full round slice. Appears in Ancient Forests on page 256. Tremendous eye appeal. 13 by 15 cm polished face; 18 mm thick; one pound and seven ounces. Adam Luna, Holbrook.

3. Nazlini. Glassy full round slice with alluring depth at the center. Appears in Petrified Wood on page 68. Tremendous eye appeal. 13 by 15 cm polished face; 18 mm thick; one pound and seven ounces. Adam Luna, Holbrook.

4. Flawless Beauty. Full round slice. During one of my many visits to Holbrook some thirty years ago, a piece of wood for sale at one of the rock shops at the south entrance to the park caught my attention and drew me in. It was an oddly prepared piece, but I could see immediately once I held it that the quality of the mineralization was amazing. Everything about it was perfect except the preparation. By this time, I knew my way around a lapidary shop, so I bought it with an idea in my mind. Upon returning to my shop in Colorado, I went to work. The base of the piece was the original full round log. Above that was a contour polished mound. I cut with the aim to get a few full round slices, and this is one. Flawless beauty. 11 by 12 cm polished face; 13 mm thick; eleven ounces.

5. Full round gem grade slice with the colors and patterns that made wood from Northern Arizona known to, and desired by, petrified wood and other rock collectors worldwide. Appears in Ancient Forests on page 256. Killer Arizona wood. 16 by 18 cm polished face; 18 mm thick; two pounds and six ounces.

6. Schilderia. Full round slice that beautifully displays the strong ray pattern of Schilderia, which is substantially the rarest of the three main genera found in the Chinle of Northern Arizona. Appears in Petrified Wood on page 60. 16 by 19 cm polished face; 15 mm thick; two pounds.

These next eight specimens are all “as found” Nazlini specimens that are fabulous as is, without cutting or polishing. Nazlini is a type of petrified and does not necessarily mean it came from the vicinity of Nazlini. Nazlini reds and yellows are renown for their liveliness and glassy bright colors. These came from Holbrook area rock shops. Over a period of about a quarter of a century, I traveled to Holbrook, AZ frequently, often several times a year, searching rock shops for great wood. Since Arizona wood is generally heavily fractured, these as found pieces are an excellent way to display the native beauty of rainbow wood with no artificial enhancement. Pleasing overall aesthetics. The size will be the approximate dimensions of a box into which the piece will fit.
