paperweights: Baccarat, France – millefiori, page 7

I’m putting five of these on this page so you can more easily see the differences.

PW1773. Baccarat Magnum Modern Museum Piece 1968. Among the most popular and beautiful antique paperweights are the spaced millefiori on muslin. Clichy made the best back then and Baccarat made the best in the modern era. There are several types. This one has colorful, detailed canes set into carefully arranged (yet far less dense than most of these, lending it an ethereal vibration) segments of twisted filigree, which is known as muslin in a paperweight as it has the appearance of muslin cloth. Etched with the Baccarat logo but neither numbered or dated on the base, which began in 1970. Condition is incredibly great – as if you bought it at a shop in Paris in 1968. Larger than most at 3 1/4 inch diameter; 2 1/16 inches tall; one pound and eight ounces. $550

PW2750. Baccarat Modern Museum Piece 1971. Among the most popular and beautiful antique paperweights are the spaced millefiori on muslin. Clichy made the best back then and Baccarat made the best in the modern era. There are several types. This one has colorful, detailed canes set into carefully arranged, tight, short segments of twisted filigree, which is known as muslin in a paperweight as it has the appearance of muslin cloth. Dunlop calls it upset muslin, but I disagree. Pictured in Baccarat Paperweights by Paul Dunlop on page 178. Numbered 25 (25st weight made that year) along with 1971 and etched with the Baccarat logo. Condition is incredibly great – perfect dome, infinitesimal shelfwear. It went from Baccarat to a collector to me and was always protected as a valuable collectible. 3 1/16 inch diameter; 2 1/8 inches tall; one pound and four ounces. $550

PW3041. This is very similar to two others on this page, but it has a higher dome as is a bit heftier. It was a good seller for Baccarat because of the classic beauty. Back in the 1850s, only the wealthy could afford fine glass paperweights like these. Etched with the Baccarat logo and engraved 1970 and 165. Condition is incredibly great – gentle shelfwear. 3 1/16 inch diameter; 2 5/16 inches tall; one pound and six ounces. $500

PW3148. Baccarat Modern Museum Piece 1982. Spaced millefiori on muslin. This is a different animal from the others on this page. The muslin comprises a thick opaque cushion of densely white filigree. Many hours went into making and then setting the filigree and the crisp, intricate, stunning canes. Each cane appears as an architectural accomplishment overlooking fresh snowfall. The pattern of canes is 3-4-5-4-3 for a total of 19 canes, one being the signature cane. Drawn-in muslin (unusual). Signature cane in the setup appears to be B1989 – but is actually a somewhat distorted B1982. Etched with the Baccarat logo and engraved 1982 and 53. This was not part of a numbered series. Condition is incredibly great, perfect. 3 3/16 inch diameter; 2 5/16 inches tall; one pound and eight ounces. $500

PW3245. Baccarat Modern Museum Piece 1969 or so. Among the most popular and beautiful antique paperweights are the spaced millefiori on muslin. This one has colorful, detailed canes set into carefully arranged, tight, short segments of twisted filigree, which is known as muslin in a paperweight as it has the appearance of muslin cloth. Etched with the Baccarat logo. Condition is incredibly great – perfect everywhere. 3 1/16 inch diameter; 2 1/8 inches tall; one pound and four ounces. $500
