paperweights: Baccarat, France – modern lampwork, page 13

PW2994. Baccarat Modern Magnum Museum Piece 1999* Limited Edition of 100 – NUMBER 78. The 1999 Baccarat theme was Les Jardins du Monde – The Gardens of the World. This is “Paimpol”. This paperweight is pictured in Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty by Paul Dunlop. A flowering climbing vine on a blue fence and a massive blossoming tropical shrub bathe in yellow morning sunlight. Note the precise detail in the flowers. Condition is excellent. Limited edition of 100 and numbered 78/100 along with 1999 for the year and etched with the Baccarat logo. 3 9/16 inch diameter; 2 5/8 inches tall; two pounds and one ounce. $1250

PW2652. Rare Baccarat 1975 numbered edition (#5) pink clematis flower with bud over translucent gemmy blue ground. This is possibly one-of-a-kind, or they may have made a few—it’s not one of the five limited editions for that year. Since the flower is similar to one they used in one of their 1974 limited edition weights and since it was only the 5th weight they made in 1975, my guess is that they were using up last year’s leftovers. Regardless, it’s a beautiful weight, evocative of their antique flower weights. Etched with the Baccarat logo on the base and engraved “5” “1975”. 3 1/16 inch diameter; 2 1/8 inches tall; one pound and five ounces. Condition is excellent/perfect dome and infinitesimal shelfwear. $500

PW2752. Rare Baccarat 1971 Six-Petal Yellow Flower, one-of-a-kind or small number made. Very fine flower and stems. Signature cane “B1972” in the aqua ground and etched on the base with the Baccarat logo and engraved 244 and 1971. From the same collection as those pictured in the Baccarat book. 3 3/16 inch diameter; 2 3/16 inches tall; one pound and seven ounces. Condition is excellent/perfect. $500

PW2262. Baccarat Museum Piece Limited Edition 1982 52/175. Beautiful dragonfly and flower over a shimmering green and rocky ground. Perfect condition with box and certificate also in fair condition and slightly musty since it is from a French collection in Normandy. The pieces from this collection are amazing – all perfect – like taking a time machine back to the factory store. Signature cane in the ground “B1982”. Base etched with Baccarat logo and engraved “1982 52/175. 3 ¼ inch diameter; 2 5/16 inches tall; one pound and nine ounces. $700

PW2268. Baccarat Magnum-size Museum Piece Limited Edition 1993 number 34/150. The certificate lists this by reference number 774-844 with no name but the gentleman who owned the collection called it Butterfly. Baccarat butterfly weights first became popular in the mid-19th Century. The butterfly hovers above a shimmering glassy green ground. Perfect condition with box and certificate in fair shape with a bit of water spotting -also slightly musty since it is from a French collection in Normandy. The pieces from this collection are amazing – all perfect – like taking a time machine back to the factory store. Signature cane in the ground “B1993”. Base etched with Baccarat logo and engraved “1993 34/150. 3 1/4 inch diameter; 2 5/16 inches tall; one pound and eight ounces. $650

PW2638. Rare Baccarat 1973 numbered edition yellow flower with bud over translucent gemmy blue ground. This is possibly one-of-a-kind, or they may have made a few—it’s not one of the two limited editions for that year (both Gridels). It’s a beautiful weight, evocative of their antique flower weights, but more perfectly crafted. Etched with the Baccarat logo on the base and engraved “236” “1973”. 3 1/16 inch diameter; 2 3/16 inches tall; one pound and six ounces. Condition is excellent/perfect. It’s from a collection where 95% of the weights were perfect because the collector got them directly from Baccarat in France and took good care of them. $450

PW2767. Baccarat Magnum Museum Piece 1970 unique triple tulip over a silvery black and white ground. Baccarat made some of their most creative and ambitious paperweights in 1970 and generally from around 1969 to 1973 or so. You can see quite a few of them on my website. 1970 was their first year producing numbered editions for collectors. Interest in glass paperweights was growing. This perfect museum piece is pictured in Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty by Paul Dunlop, on page 177. Condition is excellent/perfect – this has obviously always been in the possession of a collector. Even the black, flat, mirror-like base is pristine. It is numbered 21 (meaning it was the 21st weight they made so far that year, exclusive of numbered editions, of which there were four) along with 1970, etched with the Baccarat logo twice and has a cane with “1970”. A rare gem. 3 5/16 inch diameter; 2 1/16 inches tall; weight is one pound and seven ounces. $750
