paperweights: Baccarat, France – modern lampwork, page 9

PW3007. Baccarat 1970 Magnum Museum Piece: Crossed flowers float over a crazy beautiful white and maroon muslin ground. The basal rim is recessed half an inch and is centered with a large deeply cut star. The star pattern is more dramatic than in most uses, and in combination with the dreamy-patterned crystal ground is a magnificent piece. Excellent dome – free of issues. The base shows moderate shelfwear. 1970 was the apex of experimentation with Baccarat collector paperweights – Darwinism in glass. I have seen a hundred varieties of probable one-of-a-kind Baccarat paperweights from 1970 and 1971. Some designs evolved into more refined and appealing art, and others ran into evolutionary dead-ends, as with sulfides. This one is extra unusual. I’ve not seen another with a base shaped like this. The engraved star on the base is especially dramatic. I expect that the artist’s intention was to create a work to be held and admired as it turns in the light, a goal I believe was nicely reached. Probable One-off. Signature cane in the ground “B1970”. Base etched with Baccarat logo. 3 1/2 inch diameter; 2 inches tall; one pound and nine ounces. $450
