paperweights: Caithness, page 2

PW2564. Caithness Night & Day Crimp Rose Museum Piece. This is a super crimp rose. I am somewhat baffled by the Colin Terris book as I cannot find a paperweight with this name. I do find two different weights by Colin Terris that were sold in a set: one as Day and one as Night from 1996 in an edition of 250, which looks the same as this in the black and white image in the book. One side has a light amber-rose flashing so as you turn it the color actually changes. The base is etched Caithness Night & Day Scotland and engraved 89 – 250. The set sold in 1996 for $595, which is more than $1000 inflation adjusted. I suppose they should have bought bitcoin. Bitcoin were 5 cents each in 2009. $1000 would have bought 20,000 of them now worth $840,000,000. That would buy a lot of paperweights or a few foreign countries. Diameter is 3 1/8; height is 2 7/8 inches; one pound and five ounces. Condition is excellent/slight shelfwear. $150 SOLD

PW3098. Caithness Selene Crimp-like flower 2002 Museum Piece. The aventurine over translucent green base and luminous orange flowers, each with a shining pearl at its tip, really pops. The aventurine is similar to some of Charles Kaziun’s work. Did you know it was once punishable by death in Italy to share the secret for making aventurine glass? The base is etched Caithness Scotland Selene and engraved 95/500 and 2002. Designer was Alistair MacIntosh. This one is engraved-signed Alistair MacIntosh. I don’t know how many he signed, but I doubt he signed all 1000. It sold in 1988 for $210. Condition is perfect dome/infinitesimal shelfwear. $150

PW3104. Caithness H.M.Q.M. Elizabeth of Glamis Rose magnum crimp rose 2002 Museum Piece. Large diameter with a flattened top window. Gemlike. Delicate peachy pink petals. The rose floats in clear crystal above a perfect grid of tiny bubbles. The base is not etched, instead it is all neatly engraved along the rim of the flat base to keep the printing from interfering with the design: H.M.Q.M Elizabeth of Glamis Rose Caithness Scotland 88-500. Designer was Alistair MacIntosh. It sold in 2002 for $210. They made 141 of them. Condition is perfect, as if you bought it this morning a shop in 2002. 3 ¼ inch diameter: 2 inches tall; one pound and four ounces. $125

PW3105. Caithness OPUS 88 Crimp Rose Museum Piece. Excellent crimp rose with a striking green and white frit base over dark blue ground. Eight perfectly spaced green leaves. The base is etched Caithness Scotland OPUS 88 Collectors Paperweight 1988 and engraved 559/1000. Designer was Colin Terris. It sold in 1988 for $195, which is more than $440 inflation adjusted. Condition is perfect dome/slight shelfwear. $150 SOLD

PW3107. Caithness Mey Rose crimp rose 2002 Museum Piece. Another great crimp Rose from Caithness. Mey rose must have been produced after 2004 as it is not in my book. The design of the petals is unique, as is the base which is textured with white glass frit with a light-splitting effect. Engraved Mey Rose and etched Caithness Scotland on the base. Condition is perfect, as if you bought it this morning a shop in Scotland. 2 13/16 inch diameter;  2 9/16 inches tall; one pound and one ounce. $135

PW3117. Caithness PRIDE and BEAUTY magnum crimp rose 2003 Museum Piece. Large diameter low dome glass art that is a photographer’s dream. Gemlike. Glass is essentially the same mineral as amethyst and citrine, which as natural phenomenon can be captivating. Human art can sometimes compete as here with this bright and beautiful variegated rose at full bloom suspended above three broad translucent green leaves all floating barely above a perfect grid of tiny bubbles in an aqua blue washed crystal base. Hold it under a bright daylight-balanced bulb and turn it in the light. Look closer to fully appreciate the combined effects of texture, light, and color. This beauty looks fantastic from all directions. The base is etched Caithness Scotland PRIDE and BEAUTY Paperweight Collectors Society 2003 and engraved 50. Designer was Helen MacDonald. It sold in 2003 for $200. Condition is perfect dome/slight shelfwear. $175
