paperweights: Baccarat, France – millefiore

In my opinion modern Baccarat closepacks (concentric or not) and carpet grounds (a closepack style) comprise some of the finest representations of these forms ever made. While these modern Baccarats may not be as rare as the 19th Century versions, they are still quite rare and far more normally found in fine original condition than are the antiques. I included gridels in these pages because they are often closepacks as well.

PW2782. Baccarat Magnum Plus Modern Museum Piece 1996 Limited Edition of 100. Ouranos. I hope that means celestial clock, because that’s what it looks like to me. Ouranos is Greek for heaven. Elegant presentation of millefiori canes. Hefty weight. Dark blue translucent ground. This exact same paperweight is pictured in Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty by Paul Dunlop on page 229. Condition is perfect. New. Has box but no certificate. Engraved 55/100 along with 1996 for the year, etched with the Baccarat logo, and engraved signed along base Baccarat. 3 9/16 inch diameter; 2 3/8 inches tall; one pound and thirteen ounces. $1600

PW2602. High dome Baccarat 1989 Zodiac Church Weight Museum Piece. Fabulous, classic, colorful, intricate closepack. The canes are large, bright, and crisp. Engraved into the base are 1989 and the number 40, indicating this was the 40th paperweight they made in 1989. Etched into the base is the Baccarat logo. It is one of Baccarat’s latest issue standard sized church weights and one of its most perfect. The canes include all the signs of the zodiac – they did this so they would not be confused with their antique counterparts. Baccarat made church weights from the 1960s into the 1990s, although not every year. Date cane “B1989” is embedded within the closepack. 3 3/16 inch diameter; 2 7/16 inches tall; one pound and eight ounces. Condition is perfect, as if it just came from some fancy glass store in New York City. Fabulous weight!  $1000

PW2644. Rare Baccarat MAGNUM 1989 numbered edition (#87) stunning Interlacing Trefoils weight in red. From 1986-1989 Baccarat went through a phase where they included four designs within their numbered edition weights every year – all four (carpet ground with signs of the zodiac, interlacing trefoils, concentric closepacks, and double overlay concentric mushrooms) were of the same color scheme each year – 1986 – blue, 1987 – yellow, 1988 – green, and 1989 – red. These are millefiori weights made at the peak of the art form by the masters of millefiori. Here the perfectly arrayed pattern lays in a double twisted filigree carpet that appears to have been set in place cane by cane. This paperweight (this very one not just one of the others made that year) is pictured in the most complete Baccarat book ever published, Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty by Paul Dunlop – you need this book). This paperweight is pictured on page 211. Cane “B1989” in the setup. Engraved with the Baccarat logo on the base and “87” “1989”. Comes with a box (with signs of use) and its original certificate. 3 5/16 inch diameter; 2 7/16 inches tall; one pound and eleven ounces. Condition is excellent. $550
