paperweights: Baccarat, France – millefiore

In my opinion modern Baccarat closepacks (concentric or not) and carpet grounds (a closepack style) comprise some of the finest representations of these forms ever made. While these modern Baccarats may not be as rare as the 19th Century versions, they are still quite rare and far more normally found in fine original condition than are the antiques. I included gridels in these pages because they are often closepacks as well.

PW3128. Baccarat 1970 Zodiac Church Weight Museum Piece numbered edition. Fabulous, classic, colorful, intricate closepack. This is an amazingly intricate piece of glass art. Look at the intricacy of the artisanship involved. The Baccarat logo is etched into the base along with the number 9 and 1970. The canes include all the signs of the zodiac – they did this so they would not be confused with their antique counterparts. Date cane “B1970” is embedded within the closepack.  Paul Dunlop noted that it took Baccarat three to four months to make enough canes to produce 150 church weights. They began making them in the modern era in 1957, so by 1970 they had them perfected, as this beautiful weight testifies. 3 1/8 inch diameter;  2 inches tall; one pound and three ounces. Condition is excellent with slight shelf wear. $600

PW1220. Baccarat 1970 9-ring Close Concentric Museum piece. The Baccarat millefiori concentric closepacks from the 1950s into the 1980s are arguably the finest and most beautiful concentric closepacks ever made. The design comprises nine rings in a mesmerizing mandala. One ring includes a date cane of “B 1970”. Drawn-in staves. There is some soot in the base from the making. The bottom is marked with the Baccarat logo. Condition is excellent, essentially pristine.  3 inch diameter; 1 13/16 inches tall; one pound and one ounce.  $500

PW2809. Jardin Baccarat. Baccarat Garden. The last great Baccarat paperweight made, ever. Possibly the greatest Baccarat Closepack of all time. Baccarat Modern Super Magnum Pedestal Museum Piece 2002  Limited Edition of 26 – NUMBER 22. So rare that only 26 people in the Universe can own one. Subtract those that are in museums or damaged and who knows how low that number actually is. The last paperweight made by Baccarat in the contemporary period – Dunlop. This paperweight (this very one not just one of the other 25) is pictured in the most complete Baccarat book ever published, Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty by Paul Dunlop. This paperweight is pictured on page 255 and fills most of the page. It’s the last paperweight pictured in the book. Condition is excellent. [If you look hard you can find an unnoticeable, light, 1 cm surface scratch on the underside of the sphere, probably from the clasp on the box.] Limited edition of 26 and numbered 22/26 along with 2002 for the year and etched with the Baccarat logo and engraved Baccarat on the base. This and the few other large pedestal weights Baccarat make in their waning years are testament to the skill and breath of talent of the great paperweight artists at Baccarat – the artisans skills had been building since the 1950s and now, in what they must have known or suspected to be their final year of production, out of spite and pride came, these few amazing masterpieces. Each is an important piece in art glass history. Comes with box and but no certificate of authenticity –the box is very large to accommodate this very large glass sculpture – the box is 8 ¾ inches tall by 7 ¼ by 7.  Actual paperweight is 4 1/2 inch in diameter; 5 inches tall; weight is five pounds and eight ounces.  $6500
